It's hard to express what it’s like to fish this rod if, like me, you’re used to ultra-great carbon rods. And for the record, the Swift Epic C690 Gen. 2 and the C590 are now the first carbon rods on the water for me. [As a professional casting instructor, I have a few carbon rods…] But on a recent trip to the American West, I kept pulling fishing the 686 FastGlass. Yes, casting it takes an adjustment. Yes, it has a higher swing weight than its 9-foot carbon cousin. Yes, it bends deeper into the cork when you cast and fight fish with it. But it brings to casting and fishing a quality of motion that carbon rods just don’t have. If you are curious, Just Get This Rod. Give it more time than just a few cursory casts the first time you string it. Cast it over and over. Play with your loop size and shape. Roll cast it; single-hand speycast it. Then hook fish with it, Big ones. Feel the butt flex inside the grip when you’re wrestling a hawg brown with it. And cast huge and heavy flies with it. Push it to its limits and it will astound you, as it does me. You’ll smile a lot. It’s not that you’ll never go back to carbon. But what a great world that you can fish this rod and your carbon Epics!
